Bioactive marine and terrestrial polyketide and peptide secondary metabolites and perspectives of their biotechnological production

Abstract: Marine invertebrates and microorganisms are the sources of novel, bioactive secondary metabolites. Structurally, many of these compounds appear to be biosynthesized by polyketide synthase and nonribosomal peptide synthase, that have been found in terrestrial microbes and marine organisms. This review describes the scientific advances during the last 10 years in the emerging field of the molecular genetics of polyketide and nonribosomal peptide natural products isolated from marine organisms.
